This weekend Defoe rejoins Tottenham after an amazing U-turn from Portsmouth in a deal estimated to be worth £15 million. This comes just 12 months after swapping White Hart Lane for Fratton Park in a £7.5 million transfer. In fact, this may be third time lucky for Spurs manager Harry Redknapp who has signed the striker three times in the his short career!
It has been rumoured that Defoe never wanted to leave Spurs in the first place, but with his career stalling after falling down the pecking order behind players like Mido, Robbie Keane, Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Bent, Defoe was forced to accept that his future lay elsewhere if he had any chance of reclaiming his spot in the England squad. Seeing Spurs now become depleted of their star strikers, Defoe perhaps saw a chance to become the main-man at White Hart.
Sky Bet has Defoe at 4/1 to become first goal-scorer for Spurs against Portsmouth this weekend. Although he will have to ignore the upset of the Pompey faithful who took the 26-year old striker to their hearts, no doubt helped by his prolific scoring record of 15 goals in 31 Premier League appearances for the club. Spurs fans, on the other hand, will be hoping he has the Midas touch of 2004/2005 season where he hit 22 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions. It might even be worth backing the speedy striker to score a brace (5/1) as he may have a point to prove (to either club!)
If you’re a Pompey fan, how about 50/1 for Defoe to pick up his 4th red-card of his career? Although he seems to have got his act together, Hammers fans may remember the 2003/04 season where Defoe was dogged by disciplinary problems; with three red cards came a five game ban at West Ham! From a murky past to golden boy, to the bench and back again - what do you think the future has in store for Jermaine Defoe? Our guess is more goals!
